- Firmware (F3) issues: Slow-to-ready, translator corruption, or terminal error messages such as LED:000000CC.
- Bad sectors / weak media: Frequent retries, cloning stalls, or clicking sounds during read attempts.
- Partial head failure: Drive IDs but hangs or drops during access to specific data ranges.
- Service Area (SA) corruption: Modules damaged causing extreme slowdowns or no access to user data.
- PCB or power faults: Blown TVS diodes, damaged motor controller, or no spin after power events.
- Spindle/motor problems: Physical shock damage resulting in buzzing or no spin-up.
- Connector/solder fatigue: Intermittent drive detection due to oxidised or cracked joints.

ST3100524AS Burned PCB Data Recovery Caselog
14AUG25: This hard drive has been to Police forensics for data recovery but they failed to get the drive to mount. We found the pcb was burned up and damaged. After repairing the pcb we could get the drive to work but we also had to repair some firmware damage also. Could not get terminal access but after waiting patiently it did end up giving me terminal access where we modified the smp flags to get it to run stable.
Firmware: JC45, PCB: 100574451 Rev B.

Seagate ST31000524AS Data Recovery Caselog
Issue:
- Drive ID was not being detected
- Drive became ready but no terminal access
- Terminal showed the following output:
Solution:
Had to short the points. Timing is after the device is powered on, above message showed (and after the first click) to have terminal access. Drive ID was detected after clearing SMART via terminal but drive was still inaccessible.

Drive struggled to show file directories, scanning MFT table took too long.
